Gary Torgow
Gary Torgow is a Detroit businessman active in business, civic, charitable and communal endeavors. He is the chairman and co-architect of the Talmer Bank and Trust, a Michigan based community bank.[1] Gary Torgow is also the founder and chairman of the Sterling Group, a Detroit based real-estate, investment and management company.[2]
Education and Personal Life
Gary has earned a Bachelor of Arts and a Law degree and is married with 5 children.[3]
Career
Talmer Bank, for which Gary serves as chairman, has offices in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Maryland.[4] The bank has assets of 5.5 billion dollars [5] with over 80 offices.[4] Talmer is a public company listed on the NASDAQ exchange.[6]
Sterling Group has acquired a number of Michigan landmark buildings including the The Qube, the Fort Washington Plaza,[7] the Gateway Industrial[8] and the Guardian Building.[9]
Communal and civic activity
Gary is on the boards of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan,[10] Jackson National Life,[1] Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan,[11] Business Leaders for Michigan,[12] Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit,[13] Downtown Detroit Partnership,[13] and the Wayne State University Foundation.[14] In Gary’s capacity as a vice president of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit he hosted a large gathering in support of the Federation at his home.[15]
Gary has served as chairman of the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation,[16] the Michigan Civil Rights Commission[15] and First Place Bank.[16]
He has received a number of honors and awards including the NAACP Fannie Lou Hamer Award,[16] the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's Frank Wetsman Young Leadership Award,[17] and the Wayne State University School of Law Outstanding Alumni Award.[18]
He is the author of "Raising the Bar",[19] and "Holy Warrior",[20] and has given numerous talks[21] and lectures throughout the country.[22]
