Gary Setchell (born 8 May 1975 in King's Lynn, England) is a retired professional footballer and currently a manager at Northern Premier League Premier Division club King's Lynn Town having previously been manager at Wisbech Town.[1]

Management

Having started his management career at Wisbech Town in the Ridgeons Premier League he agreed to join reformed rivals King's Lynn Town FC in 2010. His first season in the United Counties League saw a 2nd placed finish behind winners Saint Neots, despite scoring 103 points from a possible 120. The club had reformed too late to enter the 2010/11 F.A. Cup, however they did embark on a memorable run to the F.A. Vase Semi-Finals before being defeated by Coalville Town over two legs.

The following season saw The Linnets score 106 points in the league but again finish 2nd, this time behind Long Buckby. Failing to win the league in two seasons, despite amassing over 200 points. King's Lynn were promoted as best placed runners up to the Northern Premier League Division One South. Lynn exited the F.A. Vase at the first hurdle this time around, but did manage to reach the fourth qualifying round of the F.A. Cup, eventually losing 2-1 at Conference side Tamworth despite taking an early lead. There were four divisions separating the Linnets and the Lambs at this time.

2012/13 pre-season for King's Lynn saw big changes, with many changes in the squad that finished second, the most notable the release of record scorer Jack Defty. Setchell managed to bring in three of Long Buckby's key title winning players, in Richard Bunting (who became club captain) Russell Dunkley, and Dan Quigley. Following some unsavory exchanges between some supporters and Quigley during Long Buckby's title celebrations the previous season, Setchell urged fans to accept and support the player. He subsequently went on to be voted supporters player of the season.

The 2012-13 season was very successful for Setchell, and King's Lynn Town, with the club winning the Northern Premier League Division One South by six points. Despite being amongst the division's front runners early on, a poor run of form in November and December saw the club slip out of the top 5. By mid January The Linnets were 17 points behind leaders Coalville Town. However the club were then to embark on a run that saw them lose only 2 of their final 22 league matches. This run was sufficient to catch the early runaway leaders and a 2-1 win at home to Sheffield F.C. in the penultimate match of the season saw King's Lynn Town crowned Champions. This was the first time since 1954 that King's Lynn had won a league title at The Walks, previous successes having been celebrated away from home. In-keeping with the club's tradition of cup runs, it was the F.A. Trophy that saw The Linnets make a run to the last 16. Higher division opposition in Barwell, Carshalton Athletic, Eastbourne Borough and Worksop were all accounted for, before a memorable 3-1 victory over Conference side AFC Telford United had fans dreaming of Wembley. The run was ended by another Conference side, Southport, at The Walks in January. Lynn's 2-0 defeat however sparked the start of the run which would eventually take them to the League title.

Setchell caused controversy in May 2013 after allowing players to celebrate promotion before a cup final he had called a glorified friendly and resting a number of key players the club saw its largest loss in its short history, a 1-6 home defeat at the hands of Skelmersdale United.

The 2013/14 season was King's Lynn Town's first back at Step 3 since the previous incarnation of the club folded in 2009. Setchell stated during the summer that he would allow the bulk of the previous season's squad the opportunity to step up to the higher level, and there was little in the way of transfer activity over the summer.

The Linnets ended their first season back in the Northern Premier League Premier Division in a respectable 11th position, however the club had flirted with the play off positions up until February. There was, however, no cup run this season as Cambridge City ended Lynn's interest in both the F.A. Cup and F.A. Trophy at the first hurdle.

On November 29th 2014, Setchell celebrated his 250th match in charge of King's Lynn Town, an F.A. Trophy tie against Harrogate Town.

In early 2015 Setchell endured his most difficult run as Lynn manager, having seen his side pick up just two wins in 2015 by the start of March.
