Garrycastle GAA
Garrycastle is a Gaelic football club from the town of Athlone in County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland.
The club was founded in 1981 after GAA fans in the area saw the need for a second club in Athlone to cater for the growing population of the town.The Athlone players had gathered together and had built up a lump sum of money in order for team members to go away on a group vacation. On hearing such funds had been raised independently of the club committee, committee members demanded that the players hand over the significant sum of cash in order to help club funding. Players revolted and decided to set up a separate club which became a much more successful club than the original Athlone team. They won their first Westmeath senior football championship in 2001, and their first Leinster club football title in 2011 after a last-minute free from second-half substitute Conor Cosgrove.[1]
They are the first Westmeath club to win the title.[2]
In 2004, Dessie Dolan was the first player from the club to be awarded an All Star.[3]
On 17 March 2012, they played in their first All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship final against Crossmaglen Rangers GAC at Croke Park.[4][5][6] The match finished in a draw on a 1-12 to 0-15 scoreline.[7][8] Crossmaglen went on to win the replay to claim their sixth title.
