Garry Sandhu (born Gurmukh Singh Sandhu) is an award-winning Indian Punjabi singer currently active in the Bhangra scene.

Career

Early

Garry Sandhu (born Gurmukh Singh Sandhu) was born 4 April 1984 in the Punjabi village of Rurka Kalan near Goraya Distt Jalandhar India . At the age of 12 he was taken under the guidance of Gurdip Singh Sandhu (Deepa sandhu) and was taught Kavishri. Sandhu performed at his local Gurdwara and was eventually given a spiritual platform to continue his journey into music. He moved to Birmingham, UK in 2002 where he was encouraged by family and friends to pursue a singing career. He initially performed at private functions, and eventually branched out into releasing hit singles with the help of UK producers.

Entry to music industry

He was introduced in the music industry in late 2010 after the release of his debut track "Main Nee Peenda" ("I don't drink"). The track was immensely successful. He then teamed up with DJ Surinder Rattan & Roach Killa which lead to a "Dil De De". Sandhu was then signed by well-known music producer GV with Spice Media Label. Sandhu released several more songs which led to him on being the most famous UK Punjabi singer at the time and him performing for MTV Asia.

Deportation from the UK

On 27 October 2011, it was reported that Sandhu had been arrested in 2011 UK Border Agency and taken into custody, since sources announced Sandhu to be in the UK on an illegal basis. He was kept in custody at the Detention centre, and was rumoured to be deported back to India.[1] This news was reported fake when Sandhu attended Broken Silence, a talkshow on BritAsia TV. He was interviewed by the host, though answered by his lawyer. In mid-December 2011, it was officially announced that Sandhu had been deported back to his village in India.[2]

2012

After his deportation from UK, Sandhu was announced to have quit music. His childhood friend Pankaj Sidhu from Phagwara helped him and convinced him to start singing in India. However, the rumours were denied when beat maker GV reported that he is making another track with Sandhu named "Brick". A promo of the track was released, and was filmed in Punjab with Sandhu performing in the music video. After his deportation, Sandhu had a huge comeback with "Brick" by GV which was released on 17 May 2012, and topped all charts worldwide at No.1. It managed to hit No.67 on Mainstream Charts on its release weekend which hasn't been hit by a Punjabi song for the last few years. In 2012 Sandhu was supposedly signed to Moviebox but that too was a false rumour because the song was GV's and he is the one signed to Moviebox.

Sandhu's released track "Ik Gal" featuring Sudesh Kumari released worldwide on 5 July 2012. The teaser for "Ik Gal" was premièred on Sandhu's Facebook page on 20 June 2012, and released worldwide on 21 June 2012 on Moviebox Record Label's YouTube channel. Also, a remix to "Ik Gal" by DJ Surinder Rattan was presented by Roach Killa & Moviebox on 26 July 2012, which was also released on iTunes.

In December 2012, Sandhu released his debut album Magic, consisting of 9 songs.[3] Sandhu promoted the songs himself by his production company Fresh Media Records on YouTube. The first music video from the album, "Raatan (Dark Nights)" was released a few days before the album's official release. The second song from the album "Hang" (featuring Rupin Kahlon) was released in late January 2013 and gained quite a positive response.
