Garden Island, Tasmania
Disambiguation
Much confusion exists about the names of the islands in South East Tasmania. Garden Island, Tasmania is an island along the Huon River, but Garden Island has become the pseudonym for both Green Island,[1] Smooth Island as well as one of the islands in within the Great Lake (Tasmania).[2]
"Gardners Island, in the Huon River, was named bythe Rev R. Knopwood in 1804. It is shown under that name in the 1832 map, while a Garden or Smooth Island appears at the entrance of Norfolk Bay. These facts did not appeal to those who altered the name of Gardners Island to its present title of Garden Island."[3]
Garden Island is a small stony island in south-eastern Australia. It is part of the Partridge Island Group, lying close to the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel between Bruny Island and the mainland.[4]
Flora and fauna
Much of the island is covered with eucalypt forest.[5]
