Gardein (a portmanteau of garden and protein) is a product line of animal meat-free foods made by Garden Protein International in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. Gardein founder Yves Potvin created the first veggie dog in the 1980s.[1][2] Gardein is available at grocery stores and restaurants across the United States, Canada and other places internationally. In November 2014, Pinnacle Foods purchased Gardein.[3][4]

In 2013, FoodNavigatorusa.com included Gardein's founder, Yves Potvin, in their top 10 entrepreneurs to watch.[5]

Gardein has been featured on talk shows in the United States and Canada such as The Oprah Winfrey Show[6] and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.[7] The brand also appears in Chef Tal Ronnen's vegan cookbook The Conscious Cook.[8]

Awards

Gardein Crispy Tenders (pictured at a restaurant in 2010) were named Best Snack by Shape Magazine in 2010.[9]

Since 2010 Gardein has received four Canadian Grand Prix 'New Product' awards,[10] and Gardein also won 'New Product' award from Veg News Magazine three years in a row (2010, 2011 and 2012).[11] Gardein's Seven Grain Crispy Tenders product won Shape Magazine's 'Best Snack' award in 2010, and Gardein then won the 'Good Food Award' by Natural Health Magazine in 2011.[9]

Gardein received several awards in 2014, including PETA's 'Product of the Year,'[12] the Libby Award for PETA's 'Best Seasonal Vegan Food,'[13] and the 'Foodie Award' by the Vegetarian Times.[14] Also that year, the brand received the 'Leadership in Sustainability' award at the British Columbia Export Awards,[15] and Mercy for Animals awarded founded Yves Potvin their Innovative Business Award.[16] Better Homes and Gardens awarded Gardein with 'Best New Product' in 2015.[17]
