Gamlang Razi (Burmese: ဂမ္လန္ရာဇီ) is possibly[3] Southeast Asia's highest mountain, located in the northern Myanmar state of Kachin. It is in Khakaborazi National Park and on the range of the so-called Myanmar Himalaya.[4] The mountain lies on the border tri-point of Myanmar, China, and India. Hkakabo Razi peak is located side by side of Mt. Gamlang Razi.[5] There is year round snow and glaciers. Mt. Gamlang Razi rock type is granite, according to Myanmar Survey Department.[6]

Climbing information

Andy Tyson led the American Myanmar Friendship Expedition, which made the first ascent in 2013. There were five American and two Myanmar climbers in the team, which was mainly sponsored by the Htoo Foundation, founded by Burmese business tycoon Tay Za.[7] A long section of the route that the expedition followed passes through heavy rain forest, with numerous stream crossings. The overall trek to base camp on that route takes about two weeks if the weather is favorable.

Possibly the highest peak in Southeast Asia

Gamlang Razi has been measured at 5,870.084 m (19,258.81 ft), the highest mountain in Southeast Asia whose height has been measured exactly (via GPS, the Global Positioning System). However, another mountain located in Myanmar's state of Kachin, Hkakabo Razi, is known to have been climbed only once and has never been measured with GPS. A recent expedition ascended Hkakabo Razi to 5,742 meters (18,840 feet), and reported that they estimated its summit to be another 243 meters (800 feet) higher.[8]
