Gabriella Ghermandi

Gabriella Ghermandi [1] (Addis Abeba, 1965) is an Italian writer, storyteller and singer, with an Ethiopian mother.[2]

Biography

She was born in Addis Abeba in 1965 from an Italian colonist who married a local Ethiopian girl. She moved to Italy in 1979 and lives in Bologna.

Gabriella founded a magazine about emigration El Ghibli[3] and was the artistic manager of the Festival Evocamondi, dealing with musics and writings from the world of her city Bologna. She works (using "metafore") in theater activities (like in the Atse Tewodros Project) about Ethiopian identity and literature. Gabriella is expert in writing about her identity, mixed between Italian and Ethiopian roots: she does these theater works in Italy and in other countries.

Works

Her works are in many magazines, like "Nuovo planetario Italiano". and "Mappa della nuova geografia di scrittori migranti in Italia e in Europa (Città Aperte)". She is named on "L'Italiano degli altri: 16 storie di normale immigrazione (Einaudi scuola editore)".

In 2007 Gabriella Ghermandi published her first book: Regina di fiori e di perle, un viaggio nel tempo e nello spazio.[4] In this book she explains what happened to a family in Ethiopia from the Italian conquest in 1936 until Mengistu communist dictatorship. The book has been published even in the United States for Indiana University Press "Queen of flowers and Pearls". She has been a juror of the 23rd Neustadt International Literature Prize and her candidate Mia Couto won the prize.
