Gabriele Finaldi

Gabriele Finaldi (born 1965)[1] is an Anglo-Italian art historian who has been announced as the next director of the National Gallery in London; he will take up the post on 17 August 2015.[2]

Born in London, he was educated at Dulwich College and the Courtauld Institute of Art; his doctoral research was on the Spanish Baroque painter Jusepe de Ribera.[3] From 1992 to 2002 he was Curator of Italian and Spanish Paintings at the National Gallery; he then became Deputy Director for Collections and Research of the Museo del Prado in Madrid.[4] At the Prado he was in charge of the project to build a new extension in 2007 and curated major exhibitions on Ribera (in 2011) and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (in 2012).[5]
