GRITtv is an online media platform, founded by liberal[2] journalist Laura Flanders in 2008.[3] GRITtv.org produces an array of programming, including, starting on May 12, 2008, "GRITtv with Laura Flanders"[4] which was syndicated daily on cable,[5] satellite and public television for three years [6]] until May 2011.[7] The weekly "Laura Flanders Show" is now syndicated nationally and internationally online, including on TeleSUR English.[8] GRITtv produces live events, like the politics-and-arts series, Risky Talking held at SLAM, the Streb Lab for Action Mechanics in Williamsburg, and The State of Female Justice (co-produced with VDay for One Billion Rising) as well as panels at the Ford Foundation. GRITtv also offers media training[9] especially tailored for grassroots leaders and activists, especially women. GRITtv is produced by a woman-led, woman-owned media company[10] based in New York City.
Overview
Launched on May 12, 2008 GRITtv addresses the under-representation and misrepresentation of social movements, grassroots leaders and socially engaged artists in mainstream media through a combination of interviews, field reports, commentaries, documentary reviews and economic analysis.[11] Flanders, a best-selling author[12] and former Air America Radio host,[13] also produces and distributes radio commentaries "The F Word"[14] and writes books[15] and articles.[16] In 2014, Yes Magazine and GRITtv announced a reporting collaboration, "Commonomics", to investigate "strong local economies."[17] GRITtv content appears on many progressive sites including The Nation, where Flanders is a contributing writer,[18] Common Dreams,[19] Alternet [20] and TruthOut.[21] Flanders has served as a substitute host for PBS Veteran Bill Moyers.[22] Since the earliest days of GRITtv, Flanders has been a regular guest on MSNBC, on shows including Countdown with Keith Olbermann,[23] The Ed Show,[24] All In with Chris Hayes[25] and Melissa Harris Perry.[26]
