The GE CM20EMP diesel-electric locomotives (also known as CC206 in Indonesia) are the new diesel locomotives owned by PT Kereta Api (Indonesian Railways Co.), built by GE Rail. The GE CM20EMPs are export locomotives that were originally used for freight trains, but now the locomotives can haul passenger trains (i.e. executive class, business class, or economy class). The locomotives are still in operation and all of the locomotives have been operated along the Java main line. The locomotives have two drivers cabins.
History
The first double cabin locomotives are known by the locomotives' predecessor such as CC200s (Alco-GE UM 106T), BB301s and BB304s (Krupp M1500BB), and BB305s (built by CFD).[1] But the locomotives are now mostly operated as switchers and haulers of local trains, and most of them were scrapped.
In 2000-2010s the Indonesian Railways Co. decided to buy more powerful, computerized diesel-electric locomotives such as previously owned CC204s (C20EMP locomotives). In 2010, the company decided to buy the new diesel-electric locomotive to add to its rolling stocks and replace old locomotives.
By September 2012 the company bought 100 locomotives of CM20EMPs and operated since 2013, with no bogies. The bogies are assembled by Barata Indonesia. When the ship that carries the locomotives arrived in Tanjung Priok Port, the locomotives were brought to Indonesian Railways Locomotive Workshop in Jogjakarta.
Features
Physics
The CM20EMPs were made when Indonesian Railways Co. needs any double-cab locomotives, then the GE Rail made the locomotives just like another GE locomotives. Its heads and body were like British Rail Class 70 (GE PowerHaul series), but the front windows were made like Indonesian GE U20Cs (named CC203). Then the headlights and cabs' doors are like another Indonesian U20Cs.
Engines, specifications, and electronic devices
These locomotives use a new version of GE 7FDL-8 that have a same emission to GE Dash 9 Series locomotives. The power output of CM20EMPs is 2,250 horsepowers like EMD G26 and 100 more than the 2,150hp CC203s. These locomotives have equipped with GE BrightStar™ computer systems, integrated with the GE Integrated Function Display™. CC206s have a different horns, the Nathan P2.
Allocations
All of CC206s are operated in Java and allocated at any motive power depots except Madiun and Jember.
Based on 2010 Minister of Transportation, Republic of Indonesia's Regulation No. 45, the locomotive road numberings started from CC 206 13 01 until CC 206 13 100.
- CC means the UIC class (Co'Co') or AAR wheel arrangement (C-C);
- 2 means the diesel-electric locomotives;
- 06 means the locomotives are 7th generation of diesel-electric locomotives that have such UIC class owned by Indonesian Railways Co. (because the 1st generation always starts from 00);
- 13 means the locomotives have operated since 2013;
- 01-100 means the order number.[2]
Accidents
- On 12 September 2013, a conflagration destroyed a residence settlement, at Malang. As a consequence, the locomotive numbered CC206 13 16 was burnt. The witness said that the fire started in a house, where someone was cooking and spread from there. After that, the fire flamed and licked a Honda Supra motorcycle parked 2 metres from the stove. Then, the fire burnt all of the kitchen. Because the kitchen's distance was just 2 metres from the rail that headed to Pertamina depot, the fire also burnt the CC206 13 16 that was shunting an oil train. Finally, the locomotive was completely burnt.[3] All of victims were injured on their foots and faces.[4]
- On 4 April 2014, at 18:30 West Indonesian Time, the Malabar train was derailed at Tasikmalaya, West Java due to a landslide. Finally, the two executive class coaches numbered K1 0 67 27 and K1 0 67 22 and the locomotive numbered CC206 13 55 jumped off completely from the rail. Because of heavy mountainous terrain and inaccessible location, the evacuation of CC206 13 55 was obstructed.[5]
- On 4 May 2014, the locomotive numbered CC206 13 69 and a power car (P 0 08 01) that hauled Bogowonto train was derailed after crashing into a modified container truck at Cirebon, West Java. There were no victims, but the the locomotive driver and a few of passengers were injured. The incident caused interruption of timetables, and the evacuation ran with difficulties because of the heavy weight of the CC206.[6]
