Gülse Birsel (née Şener; born 11 March 1971) is a Turkish comedian, writer, scenarist and actress.

Biography

She was born to Gültekin and Semiha Şener in 1971 in Cihangir, Istanbul. She attended Beyoğlu Anadolu High school and got a degree in economics at Boğaziçi University. She started working for Aktüel magazine as a correspondent in her second year as an undergraduate. Finally, she graduated from Boğaziçi University as an economist and Aktüel magazine as an editor in 1994. She went to New York and studied for a master's degree in the film program of Columbia University's School of the Arts. She married Murat Birsel in August 1999.

She was first noticed through her articles in Turkish newspapers, titled "Metropol Manzaraları" (Views of the Metropolis, "Metropolis" is actually Istanbul), with her easily noticed funny touches of city life. She later presented a comedy show named "G.A.G.". Between 2004-2009, she was the scenarist of the sitcom Avrupa Yakası, in which she played a leading role. In 2012, she scripted and starred in a new sitcom, Yalan Dünya. She has published five books: Gayet Ciddiyim (I'm Quite Serious; 2003), Hala Ciddiyim (I'm Still Serious; 2004) and Yolculuk Nereye Hemşerim (Where to, Fellow?; 2005), Velev Ki Ciddiyim! (Even If I'm Serious; 2009) and Yazlık (Summerhouse; 2011). Yazlık published with two different covers, pink and green. She writes weekly for Sabah.
