Board of Advisors
Nguyen DinhHuu
Mr. Nguyen DinhHuu has over 25 years of experience helping children who are at risk of societal ills in the United States, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and central Vietnam. With these experiences in hand, he serves not only as a visionary for FHF’s Children’s Shelter, but also as a legal advisor for on the board. [1]
James M. Freeman
Mr. James M. Freeman is a co-founder, and was the Chairman of the Board from 2000 to 2006. By profession, he is now an Emeritus Professor of Anthropology at San Jose State University. His other academic achievements include receiving a fellowship from the Center for Advanced Sciences at Stanford University. As a writer, he won an American Book Award for Hearts of Sorrow: Vietnamese-American Lives, and co-authored Voices from the Camps: Vietnamese Children Seeking Asylum with Nguyen DinhHuu.[2]
Richard C. Schmitt
Richard C. Schmitt serves as a valuable member of the board for his vast involvement and knowledge in the areas of executive research and education. He is now a Senior Advisor for Brown Schroeder & Associates, Inc. After serving in Brussels as its Managing Director for Europe, Schmitt became a partner with A.T. Kearny, Inc. His academic achievements include earning his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College and a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Administrative Fellowship to further his work at Wilberforce University. He is an active member on the boards of Good Shepherd Housing & Family Services, The National Child Research Center (NCRC) and the Children of the Americas. [3]
Xuandai Nguyen
Serving as the Group Product Manager at Genentech and holding both a PhD in the Philosophy of Pharmacology and an MBA from Cornell University, Ms. Xuandai Nguyen brings to the board an extensive understanding of the research and product marketing in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. [4]
Board members
Jenny Do > Chairwoman and US Children’s Shelter Director
Ms. Jenny Do was the former Chairwoman and Executive Director of the Friends of Hue Foundation. She is by profession a litigation attorney. In 2007, Do was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the City of San Jose and was recognized as Woman of the Year by the California Legislature of District 23 for her efforts both in her local community and overseas. An involved patron of the arts, she founded the Green Rice Gallery in San Jose which exhibits the works of Vietnamese-American artists while educating visitors about the obstacles that the Vietnamese-American community faces today. Thien Nhien Luong > Executive Director
Having been on the Board since 2000, Thien Nhien Luong now serves as its executive director. Her experience in the HIV/AIDS project in Vietnam exposed her to the country’s commercial sex worker industry and to how poverty is a leading factor in the deterioration of society and culture. Since then, Luong has dedicated much of her time to a variety of non-governmental organizations. Professionally, Luong has worked with the Public Health Department of Santa Clara County in a range of capacities. [6]
Lieu Thi Dang > Treasurer
Ms. Lieu Dang has much experience in America, Australia, France, and Vietnam, helping children in need get the financial and academic resources to succeed in life. As well as being a co-founder of the foundation, Dang serves as a primary visionary of FHF as a whole. [7]
Dan Do > Board Member
Dan Do founded Young Vietnamese in America, a leadership after-school program for Vietnamese-American youths, and served as its Executive Director. Do is a lawyer by profession and has become an active member of the State Bar of California. He co-founded and now co-operates Efficio Law Group, a law firm based in San Jose, California. Aside from Do’s professional accomplishments, he serves as the orator at many ceremonies and events. [8]
Dr. Phuoc V. Le > Board Member
Born in Vietnam, Phuoc V. Le is a doctor by profession whose passion lies in improving healthcare in developing nations. After graduating Phi Beta Kappa from Dartmouth College with a double major in Chinese and Biochemistry, he earned his MD from Stanford Medical School in 2006. While earning his MD, he also obtained a Master’s of Public Health from UC Berkeley, with an emphasis on International Health and worked to found a free medical clinic in San Jose specifically for the city’s immigrant population. He recently completed his Harvard affiliated Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Global Health Equity residency, during which he worked with Partners in Health to provide health care in Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi, and earthquake stricken Haiti. Michael Lopez > Board Member
Michael Lopez’s professional experiences lie in the fields of business and computer management, both in the United States and abroad. Lopez began his career holding a variety of positions in the software industry, and then worked for Sourcelink.net as the Director of Software Development. After working as a freelance translator for the following few years, he founded e2f Translations in 2003. Academically, Lopez holds a Masters of Science in Computer Science from the ENSEEIHT in Toulouse, France, and has experience teaching computer science in foreign universities, such as the KFUMP University in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand. Spencer Ton > Board Member
Holding a BA in International Relations, Economics, and Chinese Language from the University of the Pacific, Spencer Ton’s focus lies in economic and legal systems specifically in Asian countries. His experience with the United States legal and political system includes the extensive research he conducted for the San Joaquin County Public Defenders Office pertaining to injustices in the California Juvenile Justice System, as well as his involvement in Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Cabinet. In Vietnam, Ton taught an English and International Relations course at the Hue College of Foreign Languages and worked at many international non-profit organizations. [11]
Betty Duong > Board Member
After earning her law degree from UC Davis and her JD in California, Betty Duong now serves as an attorney in California. [12]
Ai Vuong > Board Member
Ai Vuong earned a degree in Anthropology and Sociology from the University of Texas at Austin, and dedicated the following few years to volunteer work. Her involvement in the program Volunteers in Asia (VIA) as a Teach-in-Hue Program coordinator led her to the Friends of Hue Foundation, where she volunteered for two years under the Ford Foundation Community Fellowship and eventually became the US Children’s Shelter Deputy Director. With her experience at FHF, Vuong plans on working in the public sector in the future. [13]
