Frequentis is an Austrian high-tech company that develops communication and information systems in fields such as Air Traffic Management and Public Safety & Transport (police, rescue and fire services, coastal rescue, railways, shipping, and others).

Frequentis is also a founding shareholder[1] of GroupEAD Europe S.L., the service provider company operating the European Aeronautical Database on behalf of EUROCONTROL (this project is considered important towards the Single European Sky). To which it is to deliver the first common voice communications systems.[2]

History

The Frequentis was founded in post WWII Vienna, in 1947. Two young engineers, Emanuel Strunz and Walther Hamm started working together. Their first contract was to help construct the Vienna II radio station, thus beginning the company's long association with voice communication systems.

An eclectic product portfolio followed, covering everything from steel hardening facilities to ultrasound therapy units. The first order for an air traffic control facility arrived in 1955, for the Air Traffic Control system at the Vienna International Airport. In 1983 Hannes Bardach became the Managing Director and later the owner of Frequentis. In 1999 Frequentis established its US subsidiary.

Their first major contract in the public transport field followed in 2002 when they received the GSM-R dispatcher contract by Deutsche Bahn in Germany. In 2005 the company gained the order to create an integrated communications system for the London Metropolitan Police (Scotland Yard).[3] In 2006 the order for furnishing the control centre for the Norwegian public safety radio network Nødnett.[4]

Today, Frequentis and its associated companies employ staff at locations in over 50 countries. It has an export rate of over 90%. While the core business remains the ATM sector, the company also builds voice communication and information systems for defence, public safety, public transport and maritime markets.
