French ship Entreprenant
Several ships of the French Navy have borne the name Entreprenant or Entreprenante, after the French word for Enterprising:
- Entreprenant (1680), a 58-gun ship, hulked in 1722.
- Entreprenante (1705), a 24-gun ship, captured in 1705 by HMS Tryton and taken into service as HMS Enterprise. She was wrecked in 1707 in the Mediterranean.
- Entreprenant (1751), a 74-gun ship. She was sunk during the siege of Louisbourg in 1758.
- Entreprenant (1787), a 74-gun ship. She was broken up in 1803.
- Entreprenant (1808), an 18-gun brig, captured during the Invasion of Île de France. Broken up as unfit for Royal Navy service.
In addition to the naval vessels, a number of French privateers and other vessels also bore the name.
- Entreprenant: On 13 March 1761, HMS Vengeance, under the command of Captain Gamaliel Nightingale, captured the 44-gun Entreprenant, which however was armed en flute with only 26 guns. Still, the capture was sanguinary for both sides.[1]
- Intreprenante: On 25 June 1800, HMS Success, under the command of Captain Shuldham Peard, captured the French aviso Intreprenante (or Entreprenante). She was armed with four guns and had a crew of 36 men. She was carrying provisions from Santa Mella to Valletta.[2]
- Entreprenant: On 13 January 1808, HMS Pandora captured the French privateer Entreprenant, of 16 guns and 58 men, six or seven miles SSE of Folkstone, with the assistance of the hired armed cutter Active.[3]
