Freegle is a British organisation that aims to increase reuse and reduce landfill by offering an Internet-based service where people can give away and ask for things that would otherwise be thrown away. It is free to use and works in a similar way to the international Freecycle.
History
Freegle was formed on 11 September 2009 after many Freecycle groups in the UK decided to break away from the US parent organisation following disagreements on how groups in the UK should operate and the dismissal of long-term UK moderators, who had been speaking out.[1][2][3]
Hosting
The majority of Freegle groups are hosted on Yahoo! Groups and many can also be used from the Facebook social networking service or from Freegle Direct (Freegle's own user interface).
Membership numbers
On February 2015, there were 403 Freegle groups with a total of 1,975,693 members in the UK.[4]
Mobile Apps
In November 2013 the mobile app Snaply was launched for the iPhone allowing browsing and posting to many local Freegle groups.[5]
