Sjöström is a big but speedy forward who plays an intense physical game. He produced a lot of points in his junior years but at the senior level adopted a more defensive role. He started his elite career playing for Frölunda HC in Elitserien and after being drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft with their first pick, 11th overall, he came to North America and played junior hockey for the Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League (WHL). Sjostrom made his NHL debut in the 2003–04 NHL season, scoring 13 points in 57 games for the Coyotes.

On July 13, 2006, Sjöström signed a new deal with the Coyotes. The contract was a one-way contract worth $1.5 million over two years.[1] On February 26, 2008, he was traded to the New York Rangers along with David LeNeveu and Josh Gratton for Marcel Hossa and Al Montoya. Sjöström played on the Rangers' fourth line, used as a checking line. On March 2, 2008, he scored his first goal as a Ranger, beating Antero Niittymäki of the Philadelphia Flyers with assists from Blair Betts and Marek Malík.[2]

On July 1, 2009, he signed a two year deal worth $1.5 million with the Calgary Flames, but was traded along with Dion Phaneuf and prospect Keith Aulie to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and Ian White on January 31, 2010.[3] Upon expiry of his contract in 2011, he returned to Sweden, signing a one-year contract with Färjestads BK of the Elitserien.[4]

Sjöström officially announced his retirement from hockey on August 29, 2013.[5]
