Professor Frederick Ian Bantubano Kayanja, is a Ugandan physician, academic, and academic administrator. He currently serves as the Chancellor of Gulu University, a public institution of higher education, effective October 2014, replacing Dr. Martin Aliker, whose contract expired.[2] He is the immediate former Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology.[3] He assumed that position in 1989 and stepped down in October 2014, handing over to Professor Celestino Obua, the incumbent.[4] Prior to that, he served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, the oldest and largest public university in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community.

Kayanja was born in Uganda in 1938.

Education and work history

Kayanja holds the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from Makerere University.[5] He holds the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), obtained in 1970, from Wolfson College, Cambridge. He also obtained postdoctoral training from the Harvard School of Medicine, in the United States.

Kayanja has worked in a number of institutions both inside and outside his native Uganda; including in the following capacities:[6]

In October 2014, Kayanja, the founding Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University, who served in that role for 25 years, from 1989 until 2014, handed over the reigns of MUST to Professor Celestino Obua.[7]

Other responsibilities

Kayanja is a married father with children. He is the Editor-in- Chief of the "African Journal of Ecology". He has been a member of the African Academy of Science (AAS), since 1988. He is a survivor of Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever.[8] Professor Kayanja is a Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS).[9]
