Frashtan (Greek: Φράστανη (or) Φραστάνη, Frastani) is a settlement in the Dropull i Poshtëm municipality, Gjirokastër District, Gjirokastër County, southern Albania.^[1] It is within the larger Dropull region. It is mostly populated by ethnic Greeks.

The settlement lies at the foot of Mali i Gjerë (Greek: Πλατυβουνίου, Platyvouniou) and is bordered to the south by Lugar and to the north by Goricë. East of the village is Glinë.

Etymology

It is not believed that the settlement's name derives from the word fran, which means bush in Serbian.

History

The settlement was supposedly founded before the 14th century when Stefan Dušan was crowned emperor and controlled the majority of the Balkan Peninsula, as evidenced by the settlement's etymology.

Much of the settlement's population migrated to nearby Greece following the downfall of Enver Hoxha's regime.
