Fraser Heights Secondary is a public high school in an neighbourhood of Surrey, British Columbia part of School District 36 Surrey. Around the school is a vast park area, a large field as well as the Fraser Heights Recreation Centre. As well as their badminton and volleyball programs. When the school first opened, it was originally designed for 1000 people, but currently there are around 1200 students attending Fraser Heights. A $14 million expansion wing with 16 new classrooms and an open area for community use opened in Spring of 2014.[1]

Programs

Fraser Heights Secondary offers a wide variety of academic, athletic, and fine arts programs that have gained modest acclaim. Fraser Heights is a branch school to the late French immersion program offered at Fraser Wood Elementary. In addition, the debate team at Fraser Heights has consistently ranked first in the Lower Mainland East. The volleyball program has grown significantly the past few years with both the Grade 8 and Junior volleyball teams winning 3 consecutive Surrey Championships, the Junior Boys winning Fraser Valleys and the Senior Boys winning AAA Provincials in 2012. Fraser Hights Secondary School is ranked 194th out of 316th in the annual ranking of secondary schools in British Columbia and Yukon.

The Fraser Heights Senior Badminton team captured the school's first ever senior provincial AAA title by winning the 2012 provincial championships hosted in Richmond over private school powerhouses Vancouver College/Little Flower Academy. The team also defeated the defending 2011 provincial champions of St.George's/ Crofton House in the semi-final en route to clinching the title.

One of Fraser Heights academic program is a joint venture with Simon Fraser University called Science Academy. It is an all-year course that extends over the period of 2 years, from grade 11 to grade 12. The course combines: Pre-Calc 12, AP Calculus BC, Chemistry 11 and 12, Physics 11 and 12, AP Physics I and II, and University Chemistry that takes place at Simon Fraser University. The course officially launched in the 2013-2014 year additionally being featured in a Surrey Leader article

Athletics

Volley Ball

The volleyball program came under criticism in 2013 after both the Junior Boys and Senior Boys teams fell short of expectations, amongst both roster and coaching changes. The Junior boys were upset in the quarter-finals of the Fraser Valleys by cross-town rivals Earl Marriott Secondary School after dropping two match points in the second set before losing the set 25-27 and dropping three match points in the third set, losing 18-16. The final score was 25-21, 25-27, 16-18 and the Junior Boys finished 5th overall, while the Senior boys lost in the Fraser Valley finals in three sets and failed to place at provincials.
