The Franklin County Courthouse in Hampton, Iowa, United States was built in 1891. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976 as a part of the County Courthouses in Iowa Thematic Resource.[1] The courthouse is the third building the county has used for court functions and county administration.
History
Initially, county business for Franklin County was enacted in the home of Judge James B. Reeve.[2] A place called Jefferson was chosen as the county seat out of respect for Judge Reeve who was from originally from Jefferson, Ohio. However, one county commissioner was not in agreement and Hampton became the county seat. A frame building was built as the first courthouse in 1857. The building was sold to a church, which used it as a home and stable. County records were kept at a school until a new courthouse built of stone was constructed in the middle of the square. It measured 48 by 70 feet and was built for $12,500.[2] The present Romanesque Revival building was designed by architect T.D. Allen.[1] It was completed in 1891 and was built for $60,000.[2]
