Franklin Cleckley

Franklin Delano Cleckley is an American law professor and former member of the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, being the only African-American person to ever do so.[1]

Personal background

Cleckley was born in Huntington, West Virginia but was raised in rural McDowell County, West Virginia. He attended Anderson College (BA), Indiana University School of Law (JD), and then earned an LL.M. from Harvard University.

Professional background

Cleckley served in the United States Navy Judge Advocate General Corps. In 1969, he joined the faculty of West Virginia University, where he taught evidence and criminal procedure. He was the first African American professor at the school. He was appointed to a short unexpired term on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals in 1994, by Governor Gaston Caperton. He declined to run for election in 1996, after polls showed he would not win. He had taken a leave of absence from the law school and resumed teaching.
