The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection" calling it "one of the classic jazz albums of the '60s and a fascinating glimpse into how thoroughly different what was already thought of as the Coltrane revolution might sound."[2] The Allmusic review by Thom Jurek states that "Four for Trane is a truly fine, original, and lasting album from an under-celebrated musician".[3]
