ForgeRock is a multinational identity and access management software corporation headquartered in San Francisco, California.[1] The company develops open source Identity Relationship Management solutions that extend across cloud, social, mobile, and enterprise environments.[3] ForgeRock has offices in the United States in San Francisco and Vancouver, and in Europe in Oslo, Grenoble, and Bristol.[4]
ForgeRock has raised $52 million in venture funding from Accel Partners, Foundation Capital, and Meritech Capital Partners.[5][6][7] Scott McNealy, co-founder and former CEO of Sun Microsystems, is an advisor.[8]
History
When Sun was acquired by Oracle in January 2010, Sun’s identity and access management software was scheduled for phase out in favor of Oracle’s in-house product.[9] In response, a group of ex-Sun employees founded ForgeRock in February 2010 to continue to develop Sun’s open source identity software.[10][11] In 2012, Mike Ellis was named CEO of ForgeRock.[12] In 2013, ForgeRock announced the industry's first Identity Relationship Management platform.[13]
Products and Services
ForgeRock offers identity relationship management services through its primary product, the Open Identity Stack.[14] Built on Sun’s open source identity and access management projects, the integrated stack provides a customer-focused approach to identity management.[11][15] The Open Identity Stack (OIS) includes OpenAM, OpenIDM, and OpenDJ.[5][16] OpenAM provides access management solutions, OpenDJ is a directory service, and OpenIDM is used for identity management.[17] The OIS is the only open source IRM platform on the market.[13]
ForgeRock’s Bridge Service Provider Edition (Bridge SPE) is built on the Open Identity Stack and links the cloud with traditional enterprise infrastructure .[13] It is a customizable component that resides on premise to help cloud service providers handle user identities across the hybrid cloud and on-premise environments.[18] In 2013, ForgeRock announced that salesforce.com had entered into an OEM agreement with the firm, enabling salesforce.com to deliver its Salesforce Identity Connect product based on the ForgeRock Bridge SPE.[18]
The source code — which has a Sun Microsystems, ForgeRock or community copyright — is freely available for use, under the terms of the Open Source Common Development and Distribution License. ForgeRock also offers pre-compiled, verified binary files,[11] which are free of charge for use in proof-of-concept and prototype systems, but require a paid ForgeRock subscription for use in a production system.[9] The subscription provides access to major releases, patches, and support.[19] Nightly builds can be used without limitations in production environments but do not receive the same level of quality assurance as released build. ForgeRock also earns revenue from professional services and training.[3]
