foodpanda (in Asia and Europe) and hellofood (in Africa, Latin America and the Middle East), is a global online food delivery marketplace headquartered in Berlin, Germany, and operating in more than 40 countries across four continents. The service allows users to select from local restaurants and place orders via the website or mobile application. Users of foodpanda/hellofood order cuisines from more than 35,000 restaurants worldwide.

Platform

foodpanda/hellofood processes and sends orders directly to partner restaurants, who then deliver to customers. The service is available online and on mobile apps.[1][2] Customers order food by entering their postcodes on the site and browsing for food from a list of restaurants. They can create meals by browsing restaurant menus and selecting items they want to order before entering an address and proceeding to the checkout. Restaurants receive these orders and then deliver to customers. foodpanda/hellofood sends out an SMS to confirm orders and their estimated delivery time.

History

foodpanda was launched in March 2012[3] in Singapore and expanded into 16 countries by the end of the year. This was followed by an expansion into seven more countries, to make a total of 23, by February 2013.[4] The company stated that it aimed to move into 40 nations in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa by the end of Q1 2014 and did so.

Website features

foodpanda has partnered with more than 35,000 restaurants worldwide[5] to increase delivery sales through online and mobile orders by providing them with technology and analytics.[6] It connects customers with restaurants that offer food delivery in their area and lets them choose, order and pay online. foodpanda also has a review section on restaurant pages, where customers can comment on sales process, delivery, taste and overall impression of restaurants .[7] With foodpanda/hellofood’s partnership with restaurant review site OpenRice, restaurant reviews were integrated into the ordering process, allowing customers to read reviews as they decide what to choose. Customer orders are also saved, allowing for reorders to be done quickly, while multiple addresses can also be stored.[8]

Mobile

In Q1 2013, foodpanda launched a mobile app.[9] The app allows users to filter restaurants by location and order food using their smartphones. It also contains optional push notifications for current special deals and location-based offers. The app is available on iOS, Android (operating system), Windows Phone, Nokia Asha platform and Nokia X Software Platform.

Investments

The startup is supported by Rocket Internet,[10] the largest e-commerce incubator in the world.[11] foodpanda/hellofood raised $20 million in funding from Investment AB Kinnevik, Phenomen Ventures and Rocket Internet in April 2013. [12] In September 2013, iMENA Holdings invested $8 Million.[13] In February 2014, there was another funding round of $20 million from a group of investors, including Phenomen Ventures.[14] On August 11, the company announced that it has collected another USD 60 Million in financing from a group of investors.[15]
