Florence Kate Kingsford

Florence Kingsford Cockerell (18721949) was an illuminator

Kingsford worked for the Ashendene Press. While there she met her future husband Sydney Cockerell who convinced her to shift her focus from illustration to illumination and calligraphy. She studied calligraphy under Edward Johnston.

Between 1900 and 1910 she produced 60 works but soon afterward became debilitated by Multiple Sclerosis. Her most well known piece was completed while making drawings of the finds of Flinders Petrie in Egypt from 1905 -1906. Her manuscript of Akenaten, Hymn to Atten the Sun-Disc currently is part of the collection of the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University of Cambridge.
