Flaw is a rock band from Louisville, Kentucky. The band was formed by guitarist Jason Daunt in 1995. They have released two major-label studio albums, an EP, and a few independent records throughout their tenure.

History

Formation, early beginnings, independent release (1995–2000)

Flaw was formed in 1995 when vocalist Chris Volz answered an ad in a local paper placed by guitarist Jason Daunt, looking for a singer for an alternative/industrial band. The band's rhythm section progressed through several line-ups but solidified with the addition of bassist Ryan Jurhs in 1996. That same year the band recorded their first independent record American Arrogance.

Because they were low on money, the band ordered everything they needed to record from the Musician's Friend catalog, then returned it using the 30-day return policy. Their album gave them the opportunity to open for acts including Fear Factory and Econoline Crush. A local radio station, The Fox, broadcast the songs from Flaw's indie disc, giving them further notoriety.

Two more independent records, 1998's self-titled album Flaw and 2000's Drama were later produced.

Record deal: first studio album Through The Eyes (2001–2003)

Flaw signed to Universal/Republic Records in 2000, and proceeded to release their debut album, Through the Eyes on Oct 30th, 2001 and debuted at #119 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album features a combination of clean vocals and screaming as well as highly distorted and melodic guitar work. The album eventually topped the Billboard Heatseekers Chart, due to moderate rotation of their music videos "Payback" and "Whole" on MTV2 and rock radio stations. In 2002, the band played at Ozzfest.

The album produced two singles. "Payback" would serve as the album's lead single in the summer of 2001, backed by a music video. "Whole" followed as a second, also getting a music video release. The opening track, "Only the Strong," was also featured in the Scorpion King soundtrack.

Second studio album Endangered Species (2004–2005)

In 2004, Flaw returned to the studio to begin recording their second studio album, Endangered Species. The band had parted ways with guitarist Jason Daunt and drummer Chris Ballinger and added a replacement drummer. The album spawned one single, "Recognize", which failed to receive significant radio airplay, but charted higher than any other Flaw single. A music video was supposed to be filmed for the single but it never happened.

Endangered Species debuted at No. 42 on the Billboard Top 200, selling 27,527 copies in its first week.

Label drop, breakup, and post-breakup projects (2004–2006)

Flaw was dropped by their label Universal Records in late 2004 and eventually broke up. Chris Volz formed Five Bolt Main with drummer Ivan Arnold who had played with Flaw from 1995 to 1998. They signed with Rock Ridge Records and released a studio album and a live album before disbanding.

After leaving Flaw, Jason Daunt played in another Louisville band called Into Another, as well as attending law school. Chris Ballinger played in a few bands and Lance Arny began playing guitar for Nailgun Strategy. Micah Havertape went on to play with Black Market Hero alongside ex-40 Below Summer members. Ryan Jurhs also temporarily played with the band.

Flaw reunion, third studio album Home Grown Studio Sessions (2006–2012)

In 2006, Flaw reunited with the line-up of Chris Volz, Jason Daunt, Lance Arny, Chris Ballinger and new bassist Alex Cando, formerly of Five.Bolt.Main. On March 11, 2007, at Headliner's Music Hall in Louisville, Kentucky, the band played its first show since their breakup, sharing the stage with Powerman 5000 before heading out on their own reunion tour with Arny's other band, Nailgun Strategy. On this tour, Flaw announced that they hoped to release an album in 2007 and were trying to find the right record company to sign with. Neither of those things ultimately happened that year.

In 2007, Volz and Daunt left to form a new band called Foundation and were playing shows with that name but ultimately reverted to using the name Flaw to avoid any confusion at the time from past members wanting to tour under Flaw as well. Volz also released a solo album Redemption. In December 2008, a MySpace bulletin was posted by Flaw stating that all future concert dates had been canceled due to conflicts between Volz and current members of the band.

In 2009, the band later came forward claiming that former "hired guns" in Flaw hacked the official MySpace and wrote this false information. They revealed that they were still working on a new album, had a new drummer (Sean Reud) and had replaced the departed Daunt with guitarist Andy Russ. Their next album, Home Grown Studio Sessions was later independently released for digital download via the website DiGiSTATION on November 16, 2009, and at all concerts since its release.

The band continued to tour into 2010, with Chris Marple filling in on bass until Ryan Jurhs could return due to work/scheduling conflict. In July 2010 Arny once again brought Chris Marple (Caldera & Kentucky Death Wish) back into the picture. This time Marple would be playing guitar, along with Arny, Jurhs, Volz & Rued to complete the full line-up once again.

Flaw tour dates were scheduled immediately & posted from July through October 2010. During the course of each run, these tours were with Tantric, Burn Halo, and Saturate. Unfortunately, somewhere during the course of these 3 tours, there was animosity between certain members & Flaw canceled all remaining tour dates with no explanation, on November 2, 2010. After a slew of missed shows and internal conflict, Chris Marple left Flaw and announced he joined the band Signal The Revolution in 2012.

Lance Arny joined Saturate[1] as the 2nd guitar player in December 2012 and contributed guitar work to a new EP Damage the Memory which was released on February 8, 2013.[2]

Reforming, The Reawakening Tour and upcoming fourth studio album (2013- Present)

On July 17, 2013, it was announced that the band had returned to the Through The Eyes line-up of Jason Daunt, Chris Volz, Lance Arny, Ryan Jurhs and Chris Ballinger.[3][4] It was also stated that they are working on a new album and rehearsing for live shows in August.[5][6][7] On October 29, 2013, a new website went live after eight years of having their main website inactive.[8][9]

On February 16, 2014, the band uploaded a new song entitled "Uncurled" on their website, and announced that they had recorded "14 or 15 new songs", noting that three songs are old songs updated for the new album.[10][11][12] The band also announced on February 17, that a new song called "I'll Carry You" will be available.[13]

In June 2014, it was announced that Flaw would be playing the Louder Than Life Festival in October 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky, with bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit and Stone Temple Pilots.[14] On July 8, 2014, Flaw started an Indiegogo campaign to raise money for a full US tour with a new album to be released sometime in 2015.[15]

On September 18, 2014, it was announced on the band's official Facebook page that Lance Arny would no longer play with the band due to internal conflict with the rest of the band members.[16] He was to be replaced for all subsequent shows going forward. On December 22, 2014, it was announced that drummer Chris Ballinger was released from the band due to "irreparable creative and personal differences".[17] Shortly into the new year, it was announced that Corey Sturgill would be replacing Ballinger on drums for all further shows and as a member of the band.

On January 22, 2015, Chris Volz announced on his Facebook page that Flaw would be heading to Nashville, Tennessee, on January 23, to begin work on their fourth full-length album (third through a record label) to be released in summer 2015. They will be working with producer Skidd Mills before going on tour afterwards.[18] It will be the band's first studio album not independently released since Endangered Species in 2004. No official announcements have been made about what record label will be releasing the album.

In late March 2015, it was announced that Flaw would be going on a tour called "The Reawakening Tour" with special guests Seasons After between May and June and would then release their next studio album afterward.[19] In April 2015, a new song titled "We All Bleed Red" was released exclusively to SirusXM Octane to test-market new material in hopes to gain a broader appeal and a wide release.[20]
