Flamenco Beach

Flamenco Beach is a seaside resort in the island of Culebra, Puerto Rico, known for its excellent swimming, sport fishing and diving sites. Stretching for a mile around a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay, Playa Flamenco is not just Culebras best beach; it is also generally regarded as the finest in Puerto Rico, and quite possibly the whole Caribbean. In fact, certain discerning travel writers have suggested that it is among the top 10 in the world, including been named at 3rd spot by CNN Travel (March 2014)[1][2]

Tourism

Flamenco Beach might just be the most beautiful beach in Puerto Rico, and one of the top beaches in the world. With lifeguard towers, numerous kiosks selling food, clothing and beach accessories, and easy access from the town of Dewey, it’s the crown jewel of Culebra Island.[3]

Getting There

Two main ways to get to Culebra Island is by airplane or by ferry. Airplanes depart from Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (SJU) [4] and arrive at Culebra´s airport. From there take a taxi to Flamenco Beach. By ferry, you have to arrive to Fajardo and from there take the ferry to Culebra.[5] Once you arrive at Culebra´s port you take a taxi to Flamenco Beach.

The beach has bathroom facilities, showers, bathrooms and kiosks selling local food and others including hamburguers and hot dogs. Also, Flamenco Beach provides areas for Camping which are provided with potable water, light poles, bathrooms and shower facilities.

As stated, Flamenco Beach is a popular tourist destination among mainland Puerto Ricans and Americans and has been considered by Discovery Channel to be the second-most beautiful beach in the world.[6]

Geography

Flamenco is located on the northern shore of Culebra. The beach lies on a half-mile-wide, horseshoe strip of coast. The beach is bordered by the Culebra National Wildlife Refuge, which is of itself one of the oldest wildlife preserves in the United States. Off the coast of Flamenco, approximately a quarter-mile, is a reef where the surf breaks. Characteristic of Flamenco is the beach's white sand.[6][7]

Flora and fauna

Located in the waters off of Flamenco are parrot fish, blue tang, multiple species of wrasse and other Caribbean sea fish species. Crustacean species such as Ghost Crab are also observed.
