First Church of Christ, Scientist, Richmond, is a church on Sheen Road, Richmond, London. It is a branch of The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts, which was founded in 1879.[2]
Architecture
It was built between 1939 and 1953; the architects were W Braxton Sinclair[1] (who also designed the Grade II listed[3] First Church of Christ Scientist, Bromley)[4] and Barton.[1] Bridget Cherry and Nikolaus Pevsner describe it as having "heavily modelled red brickwork, with some fine Baroque details".[1]
Services and activities
On Sunday mornings there is a church service and also a Sunday school for children and young people up to the age of 20. A weekly testimony meeting on Wednesdays evenings includes readings from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, hymns, prayer and an opportunity to share testimonies of healing, experiences and remarks on Christian Science.[2]
The building includes a reading room which provides a quiet area for prayer and study.[2]
The church is registered as a place of worship in accordance with the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855; its number on the register is 81398.[5]
