Firebrand Books is a publishing house established in 1985 by Nancy K. Bereano---a lesbian/feminist activist in Ithaca, NY. It is a feminist and lesbian publishing house and among the many which grew out of the Women's Press Movement. Other presses of that period include Naiad Books, Persephone and Kitchen Table Women of Color Press. It published the germane work of several authors: Alison Bechdel, Dorothy Allison, Jewelle Gomez, Leslie Feinberg and Cheryl Clarke among them. Firebrand has garnered twelve Lambda Literary Awards (including the Publisher's Service Award) and four American Library Association Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual Book Awards. After her retirement in 1994 the press was purchased and recently was located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
