FileTopia is a free, Windows-based peer-to-peer file sharing client, and networking tool allowing users to share files, use chat, send voice recordings, and instant messages. Filetopia also features a buddy list. Users can share globally (on Filetopia network), or only in specific channels-chat rooms (by using another shared files list), or in "Trade Mode". It is not a centralized system, users must connect to multiple servers in order to find each other, but file transfers, etc. are conducted on a peer-to-peer basis.

All communication is encrypted, using several ciphers[1] such as AES, Blowfish, and Idea.[2]

By default Filetopia is not an anonymous peer to peer network : when sending or downloading files, IP addresses are not shown[3] but an Internet expert may find them. To protect the users identity, they are able to use a "bouncer",[4] which is essentially a proxy, to keep their IP hidden from the Internet.

History

FileTopia software development has been halted in 2002 (v3.04d). Originally, the developer was busy creating a BitTorrent client : TorrentTopia.org (last released v1.90 in 2005[5]) while the boom of the BitTorrent era - but with promises of future versions "in the coming months" since 2003-2004 within popular FileTopia chatrooms, it has been assumed that a new version of the software is unlikely. However, even with the aging current FileTopia software version (3.04d, 2002), there is still (in 2013) a small, but vibrant community of people sharing a wealth of data.

In 2003, Filetopia v3.04 was reviewed in PC Magazine, and rated 3/5.[6]

In 2004, the author of Filetopia is interviewed on the web site Slyck.com.[7]

Filetopia is compatible with the (defunct) Microsoft Agent gadget.
