Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics – Men's tournament
The men's field hockey tournament at the 2016 Summer Olympics will be the twenty-third edition of the field hockey event for men at the Summer Olympics. It is scheduled to take place over a thirteen-day period beginning on 8 August, and culminating with the medal finals on 20 August. All games will be played at the Olympic Hockey Center in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Competition format
The twelve teams in the tournament were divided into two pools of six, with each team initially playing round-robin games within their pool. Following the completion of the round-robin, the top two teams from each pool advance to the semi-finals. All other teams play classification matches to determine the final tournament rankings. The two semi-final winners meet for the gold medal match, while the semi-final losers play in the bronze medal match.
Qualification
Each of the continental champions from five confederations receive an automatic berth, as does the host nation if they place higher than thirtieth in the FIH World Rankings by the end of 2014 or if they finish no worse than sixth at the 2015 Pan American Games. This restriction was decided between the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) due to the standard of field hockey in Brazil. In addition to the six or seven highest placed teams at the Semifinals of the 2014–15 FIH Hockey World League not already qualified, twelve teams will compete in this tournament.[1]
