Andy Hinds at AllMusic gave Fever Dream four stars out of five, calling it "pop-metal with musical muscle" and that it contained "some of Kotzen's best guitar playing." He praised Kotzen's decision to sing on his own album in the same vein as Joe Satriani, while describing Kotzen's vocals as enjoyable and his range "more than adequate to convincingly deliver his ideas".[1] Praise was also given to Kotzen's guitar work, with Hinds saying that his tone and phrasing had improved considerably since his debut album. However, he remarked that the overall sound of Fever Dream rendered it somewhat dated, and that it would have been better placed had it been released a few years prior. Highlights noted were "Dream of a New Day" (which was featured in the 1991 film Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey), "Fall of a Leader", "Yvonne" and "She".[1]
