Feroke is a Municipality and a part of Kozhikode metropolitan area under Kozhikode Development Authority (K.D.A) in the Kozhikode district of the Indian state of Kerala.

Name

Originally, Tipu Sultan named the place Farookhabad. This name changed into Feroke by the British.It is also assumed that Tipu Sulthan used Feroke as his capital in Malabar. The remains of a fort built by Tipu Sultan still stand in Feroke with a long tunnel to the river. Authorities are trying to preserve the fort remains as a site of historical importance. The old bridge at Feroke was built by the British in 1883.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census,[1] Feroke had a population of 29,504. Males constitute 49% of the population and females 51%. Feroke has an average literacy rate of 81%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 79%. In Feroke, 13% of the population is under 6 years of age. chandakadav is a furniture manufacturing village

Industry

Feroke is the cradle of the tile industry in Kerala, especially Tile Industry. The rapid rivers from the Western Ghats after passing through forests carry the clay which is the raw-material for tiles, pottery and ceramic wares. There are more than a dozen tile factories in Feroke alone.Feroke is also well known for wood and Timber industries.

Cheruvannur and Feroke are predominant industrial areas of Kozhikode. A number of tile factories, match factories, Timber industries, Automobile dealerships, Footwear industries.steel factories,etc. are located here, providing employment to thousands of workers. The Steel Complex is also located here.It is assumed that Feorke-cheruvannur is the second biggest industrial area of Kerala after Kalamassery(Cochin).

The needed development is Kozhikode–Feroke–KondottyEdavannaNilambur - Sulthan Bathery- NanjangudMysore Rail Line. It will be the shortest route from Kerala to Bangalore, Mysore, Hyderabad, and northern Indian cities.

Places of Interest near Feroke

Tourism

Edavannappara is a very scenic village near Feroke and there is a lot of tourist potential here. The undulating hills in the neighbouring villages can be utilized to make it a world class picnic location. Three kilometres away lies the even more attractive Elamaram village on the Chaliyar river. There is a ferry service here that can take you to the northern side of the Chaliyar river. The ticket is Rs.5.00 and the motor boat service is available every half an hour between 6.40 a.m. and 8.40 p.m. including Sundays.ShoppingEven though this a tiny village, the shopping facilities available are quite surprisingly elaborate. The MC Mall in the heart of the town looks like an upmarket city facility. There are also many theme restaurants here. It appears that the villagers here have a flarir for good living.

Beypore (5 km)

Beypore town is about 6 mi (10 km) from Kozhikode, at the mouth of the Beypore river. The place was formerly known as Vaypura and Vadaparappanad. Tippu Sultan named the town “Sultan Pattanam”. It is one of the important ports of Kerala and an important trading centre.

Beypore is famous for its boat building yard where mammoth crafts known as Urus are being built. It is a major fishing harbour of Kerala. There are two man made extensions to the sea to facilitate easy access for fishing boats.

Chaliyam (4 km)

An island in Kadalundi Amsom formed by the Beypore and Kadalundi rivers, Chaliyam was formerly the terminus of the Madras Railway. The bridge at Feroke which extended the railway up to Kozhikode in 1888, reduced the importance of Chaliyam.

Kozhikode Beach (11 km)

The beauty and serenity of Kozhikode beach is not yet exploited to develop it into a tourist centre. Still people from all around gather here to enjoy the sunset and it is a popular retreat for local people. Two sea piers almost 125 years old extending well inside the sea are a speciality. Lion’s club, children’s park make evening pleasant for visiting families. Fishermen with their small rowing boats entering the sea, fighting the waves and returning with varieties of fish is worth watching.

Kappad (27 km)

On 27 May 1498, Vasco Da Gama landed at Kappad with three vessels and 170 men. If you travel 10 mi (16 km) north of Kozhikode by Kannur road, a small road near Tiruvangoor Health Centre will guide you to this beach of historical importance. A monument is here to commemorate the historical landing. An ancient temple on a hillock, facing the deep sea, is an added attraction.

Kallai (9 km)

Kallayi, situated on the banks of the Kallai River, this was the main trade centre of the city Kozhikode. Kallai was known as the world’s best timber trading center. Even now, it is the place for timber trade in Malabar.

Kadalundi (6 km)

Kadalundi is one of the oldest towns in Kerala and is an example of the old ports called "thundies". The tidal/mangrove forest on the banks of the Kadalundi river make it a picturesque area. The deltas formed by the Kadalundi river add to the beauty of the place. The town is divided into two by the river— Kadalundi in the Kozhikode district and Kadalundi Nagaram in Malappuram district. Thousands of migratory birds from all over the world gather here starting in November.

Mananchira Square (10 km)

A new attraction in the heart of the city, Mananchira Maithan, is the sublimation of the concept of a planned modern city. The historic maithan, adjacent to Manachira has been converted into an arcadia with beautiful trees and plants, artificial hill, shrubs, sculpture, an open-air theatre and above all, a musical fountain. No doubt, locals and tourists seeking leisure and relief from the mad rush outside, find shelter here. Mananchira Maithan is managed by the Corporation of Kozhikode.

Pazhassi Raja Museum (15 km)

Pazhassi Raja Museum is located at East Hill, 5 km from Kozhikode. Copies of ancient mural paintings, antiques, bronzes, old coins, models of temples, megalithic monuments like dolmonoid cysts, umbrella stones etc. are displayed here.

Science Centre and Planetarium (10 km)

Regional Science Centre and Planetarium are at the city’s Jaffarkhan Colony offers extensive insight into the mysteries of the universe, the planets and the galaxies. There are daily shows at 12:00, 14:00, 16:00 and 18:00.

S.M. Street (10 km)

Sweet Meat street, popularly known as S.M. Street with its cross roads, is the busiest shopping spot of Kozhikode. Old bakery shops here are known for the famous Kozhikode halwa and banana chips.

Thusharagiri (58 km)

Thusharagiri is 48 km from Kozhikode and is one of the recently identified tourist centres. The waterfalls and streams amidst the hilly regions are really a feast to the eyes.
