Fernando Cabrera (born April 16, 1964), is currently a Democratic New York City Councilmember from the borough of The Bronx. He represents council district 14 which encompasses the neighborhoods of Fordham, Kingsbridge, Morris Heights, and West Bronx. Cabrera was born in The Bronx to a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother.
2009 Election
Incumbent Maria Baez' popularity decreased due to her low attendance rate, and supporting the extension of term limits. Fernando Cabrera challenged Baez to a primary election for the Democratic nomination. Due to Cabrera recently changing political party,[2] Baez attempted to portray Cabrera to the Democrat heavy section of The Bronx as a Republican. But with the backing of The Bronx Democratic Committee [3] and the endorsement of key unions, Cabrera was able defeat the incumbent by just over 1% difference in three-way race that included Yudelka Tapia.[4] Cabrera followed that by winning the general election against Republican Yessenia A. Duran and Conservative Lisa Marie Campbell.[5]
