The Federal University Dutse or Federal University, Dutse, which is informally known as FUD or uni dutse, is among the (now) twelve new universities created by the Federal Government of Nigeria since 2011. The universities were created to improve quality and access, the two major problems of the Nigerian University System. They were also created to ensure equity in the distribution of federal resources across the country.

The university's campus is located in the ancient town of Dutse the state capital of Jigawa. FUD seeks to attract a diverse cast of lecturers and students, support research and teaching on local, national and global issues and create academic relationships with many universities and higher education institutions in Nigeria and across the world. FUD will offer a broad range of degree programs in Humanities, Natural and the Social Sciences and Agriculture, and in years to come, courses in Management Sciences, Medicine, Education, Engineering and Law.

From the university's pioneer crop of 205 students enrolled in four academic programmes in three faculties had grown to 1,597 students in the university's third academic year of operation. FUD currently run seven academic programmes in the Faculty of Science including basic sciences (Physics, Chemistry, Botany and Zoology) and applied sciences (Microbiology, Computer Science and Environmental Management and Toxicology). The university will introduce B.Sc. Biotechnology in the coming academic session.

In the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the university runs the BA English, Bsc Economics and Bsc Criminology and Security Studies for the Faculty of Agriculture, in addition to B. Agric programme, we have introduced Bsc Forestry and Wildlife as well as Bsc Fisheries.

Federal University Dutse focuses on building relations with other universities locally and internationally. The university has recently entered an agreement with North Dakota State University.
