He is of Assyrian origin.[2] In 1987, when Fares was 14 years old, his family moved to Sweden, residing in Örebro.[3] They moved to escape the Lebanese Civil War and relocated to Sweden because they had relatives who already lived there.[4] Fares says he learned English within three months of living in Sweden..[4]
From the age of 15 years old Fares acted in a local theater group in Örebro.[3] When he was 19 years old, he then attended drama school in Mölndal in Gothenburg, Sweden.[3] He spent six years working in the Theatre Tamauer.

For 2013's Kvinden i buret (English title: The Keeper of Lost Causes),[9] which was set in Denmark, Fares learned Danish. He said he went to a private language school for two months before shooting and "had a lot of help from my co-star Nicolaj Lie Kaas."[1] Keeeper of Lost Causes is based on the bestselling novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen, and is the first of four features based on Adler-Olsen's Department Q novels.[10] Fares and Kaas signed on to star in all four films in the franchise.[10] Keeper of Lost Causes was Denmark's number 1 film of 2013.[11]
Fasandræberne (English title: The Absent One) is the second film in the series.[12] It also broke Danish film grosses, setting new records. [13] The third film in the series, A Conspiracy of Faith (Flaskepost fra P), will premiere in late 2015.[14]

I have always tried to mix it up. Interesting offers are coming from that part of the world – but I am not interested in playing bad guys."[1]
On moving to Sweden from Beirut: "It was a very difficult age to move. Everything about Sweden was different and since I wasn't really a child anymore, it was hard for me. My father's sister told me not to get into one of those [refugee centers], since then you’d never become a part of society. I knew that I had to learn the language quickly and just adapt to the new country."[4]
On religion, Fares says: "I’m not a Muslim. I was born Christian."[1] Adding that he is not very religious.[1]
