Fabian Giefer (born 17 May 1990) is a German professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for Schalke 04 in the Bundesliga.[1]
Club career
Born in Adenau, Rhineland-Palatinate, Giefer began his football career at 1. FC Oberahr as his first youth club. He then move to TuRa Lommersdorf before moving to Bayer Leverkusen, where he started his professional career. He would soon promoted to Bayer Leverkusen II.
Bayer Leverkusen
After being promoted to the first team, He made his Bundesliga debut on 6 November 2009 against Eintracht Frankfurt.[2] He had a clean sheet and the team won 4–0.
On 1 December 2010, he made his international debut for the UEFA Europa League, substituting Bayer's #1 goalkeeper, René Adler. The team won 1–0 against Norway's Rosenborg.
On 7 August 2011 against 1. FSV Mainz 05 in the opening weekend of the 2011–12 Bundesliga season, Giefer was concussed and stated that he doesn't remember anything about the last month.[3][4][5]
Fortuna Düsseldorf
On 4 June 2012, it was announced that Giefer will join Fortuna Düsseldorf with a two-year contract until 30 June 2014.[6] Giefer revealed he turned down a move to Bayern Munich because he wanted a first team action as Giefer would be a back-up to first choice goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, if he did joined.[7] He made his competitive debut, in the first round of DFB-Pokal, in a 1–0 win over Wacker Burghausen[8] In a 3–2 loss against Augsburg, Giefer says he was responsible for the conceding after the match and will not get over his mistake[9] A week on, Giefer would make amends when he provided assist for Axel Bellinghausen, in a 1–0 win over Greuther Fürth.
Schalke 04
In June 2014, it was announced that Giefer will join Schalke 04 and he was assigned the squad number 34.
