FIDE World Rankings

The Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) is the organization that governs international chess competition. At monthly intervals, FIDE publishes the lists "Top 100 Players", "Top 100 Women", "Top 100 Juniors" and "Top 100 Girls", as well as rankings of countries according to the average rating of their top 10 players and top 10 female players. The Elo rating system is used.

Top women

Women may play in the same events as men in chess and are rated together with men. As of February 2015, the highest rated female player is Judit Polgár, ranked 66th in the world, although she has previously ranked as high as eighth. In August 2014, Polgár announced her retirement from professional chess, leaving Hou Yifan as the de facto number one female player. Despite her retirement, Polgár will remain on the official ranking list until one year after her last official game, which was played at the 41st Chess Olympiad in August 2014.
