Eye in the Sky is an upcoming international thriller film starring Helen Mirren, Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi, and Alan Rickman.[1] The film, directed by Gavin Hood based on a screenplay by Guy Hibbert, features drone warfare. Filming began in South Africa in September 2014, and a theatrical release is scheduled for 2015.

Synopsis

Colonel Katherine Powell (Mirren) leads a secret drone mission to capture a terrorist group living in a safehouse in Nairobi, Kenya. When Powell learns that the group plans to carry out a suicide attack, her objective is changed to kill the terrorists. Drone pilot Steve Watts (Paul) targets the safehouse for destruction but reports a nine-year-old girl entering the kill zone. Powell contacts politicians and lawyers to determine whether or not to take action.[2]

Cast

Production

Eye in the Sky is directed by Gavin Hood based on a screenplay by Guy Hibbert. The screenplay was a project initially being developed at BBC Films, and FilmNation Entertainment acquired Hibbert's screenplay from BBC in September 2011 for Oliver Hirschbiegel to direct.[7] Production did not happen as anticipated, and director Gavin Hood sent Xavier Marchand, president of Entertainment One, the screenplay. Marchand decided to develop it to produce a film with Hood directing.[8] Entertainment One partnered with Raindog Films in April 2014 to produce Eye in the Sky with Colin Firth as one of the producers.[9] Actors Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul joined the cast the following month.[10] Stunt performer Fleur van Eeden was hired to be Mirren's body double despite an age difference of 39 years.[11]

Hood, who was born in South Africa, chose to film Eye in the Sky in his home country.[12] Filming began in South Africa in September 2014.[8][11] Since the South African Civil Aviation Authority did not grant filmmakers permission to fly real drones in the country's airspace for the production, they will use visual effects to display the drones.[13] Hood found practical locations throughout South Africa that substituted for settings in the film: an area that looked like Surrey for Mirren's character, clubs that looked located in Las Vegas, and Beaufort West which was a backdrop for the state of Nevada in the United States. Filming concluded on November 4, 2014.[14]

Release

The film is scheduled to be released in 2015.[8] Entertainment One will distribute the film in the United Kingdom, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain, Australia, and New Zealand. Its subsidiary eOne Films International is selling rights to distribute in the United States.[10]
