Expressway S1 or express road S1 is an expressway under construction in Poland with a planned length of 130 km (81 mi), which is located in the Silesian and Lesser Poland voivodeships. Upon completion it will connect the A1 motorway with the A4 motorway and the border of the Czech Republic in Cieszyn-Boguszowice along with the Expressway R48 in the Czech Republic. The main part of the route is Eastern beltway of Upper Silesian Industrial Region.
Completed Parts
As of 2009 the expressway had the following sections:
- Pyrzowice – Podwarpie: 9.5 km (5.9 mi), temporarily single laned. This part was open on 20 November 2006.
- junction Podwarpie: 1.5 km (0.93 mi)
- Dąbrowa Górnicza – Mysłowice - Kosztowy – Tychy: 30.2 km (19 mi), completed 1978-1983
- Bielsko-Biała – Cieszyn: 33.8 km (21 mi)
The Bielsko-Biała – Cieszyn section was completed over a period of 16 years, with the following parts:
- Bielsko-Biała – Pogórze, 16 km (9.9 mi), built 2002-2006, including bypass of Grodziec (4.9 km (3.0 mi), opened 18 December 2006)
- Międzyświeć – Cieszyn, 12.4 km (7.7 mi), completed 1991-1995 & 2002-2005
- bypass of Skoczów 5.5 km (3.4 mi), opened in November 2007
The construction of Skoczów bypass was drawn out because of the bankruptcy of the contractor. GDDKIA picked Dragados and Polimex-Mostostal, to finish this stretch of the expressway.
