Explorer Elementary Charter School

Explorer Elementary Charter School is an independent public school, founded in 2000, which serves 340 children in grades K-5 who are enrolled by lottery from throughout the San Diego, California area. Explorer’s mission is to create caring, confident, lifelong learners in a compassionate learning community that respects and values the different interests, abilities, learning styles, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds of each child. In 2005, Explorer joined the family of eight charter schools managed by the High Tech High charter schools organization.

Explorer's Social Emotional Learning Curriculum is central to Explorer's goal of developing a community of confident, inspired learners. Research indicates that social and emotional skills create higher achievement, increase "on task" behavior, and increase focus, learning and collaboration in the classroom. Explorer's Social Emotional curriculum uses both a cognitive curriculum called Second Step, and specific support structures for all members of the community to enhance social and emotional intelligence.

Explorer has been recognized as a Distinguished School by the California Department of Education and as a Best Practices School by the San Diego Urban League.

Explorer is located on the grounds of the former Naval Training Center San Diego at 2230 Truxton Road, San Diego, CA 92106.
