Expedition Foods is a company that produces freeze dried dood from the United Kingdom. Its founder, Ian Williams, pioneered the use of high-energy freeze dried meals to supply youth groups taking part in The Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions and mountain rescue communities with pre-cooked, ready-to-eat, nutritious expedition meals.

History

Expedition Foods was founded by Ian Williams in 1995. He was an experienced expedition leader, who sought to research and develop better meals to take on these journeys. In an interview with BBC Yorkshire in 2008 he explained that the only food available was in catering packs and "They were often rich in monosodium glutamate as a preservative, when you live on that food, you do suffer, inside and out. So I started to research products and then when I found myself out of a job in 1995, I took a handshake and I started the business, researching food just for expeditions".[1]

The aim of Expedition Foods was to provide nutritious meals with the most calories in a meal, but in the lightest possible weight as his customers would be carrying all their food with them for many days or weeks, so volume and weight were of the utmost importance. By the time Ian Williams sold the company in 2010 he had developed 19 meals including 800kcal main meals, breakfasts and desserts.

In 2010 Expedition Foods was bought by RacingThePlanet.[2]

Concept

Expedition Foods meals are freeze-dried (and therefore dehydrated), pre-cooked, nutritious, high-energy, lightweight packets of food with long shelf-lives. It takes less than 10 minutes to re-hydrate a meal with hot water; cold water can also be used, but will take much longer to rehydrate the meal.

Uses

Experienced expedition leaders, explorers, survival experts, sailors and endurance athletes have used Expedition Foods meals including Ray Mears, Ben Fogle, James Cracknell,[3] Volvo Ocean Race teams Abu Dhabi, China and Richard Branson.
