Excellence Canada is a not-for-profit organization that specializes in the training, implementation, and certification of organizational excellence in Canada.[1][2] Excellence Canada is also the custodian and adjudicator of the Canada Awards for Excellence, under the Patronage of His Excellency, the Right Honourable David Johnston C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada.[3][4][5]

History

Established in 1992 through start-up funding provided by Industry Canada, Excellence Canada (then the National Quality Institute)[6] was formed as a not-for-profit partnership between the Government and leading private sector organizations to provide strategic focus and direction for Canadian organizations.[7][8] In this endeavour, Excellence Canada established the Canadian Framework for Business Excellence in conjunction with Industry Canada and quality experts across Canada.[9]

Recent developments include an Excellence, Innovation and Wellness Standard,[10] a Healthy Workplace Standard and a Mental Health at Work Framework.[11] In 2014, Manulife Financial entered into a three year sponsorship as the Mental Health Partner in Excellence with Excellence Canada in an effort to promote mental health practices in the workplace around Canada.[12]

Awards

The Canada Awards for Excellence are internationally recognized as the national quality award for Canada.[13] In its patronage of this award, Excellence Canada is akin to the likes of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who preside over the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in the United States, and the Union of Japanese Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), who govern the Deming Prize in Japan.[14] Past recipients of the Canada Awards for Excellence include Ricoh,[15] Ceridian, and Sun Life Financial,[16]

In 2012, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston attended the 28th annual Canada Awards for Excellence. At the awards, he served as the keynote speaker and presented the Order of Excellence (Excellence Canada's highest award) to seven deserving organizations.[17]
