Ewen MacPherson of Cluny

For the Physician, see Cluny MacPherson .

Ewen MacPherson of Cluny, also known as "Cluny Macpherson", was the chief of the Clan Chattan at the time of the Jacobite Rising of 1745.[1] He took part as a supporter of Charles Edward Stuart and after the rebellion was crushed he went into hiding. He was made famous by Robert Louis Stevenson, whose fictional hero David Balfour meets Cluny in one of his hiding places, the so-called "Cluny's Cage". In real life Cluny was associated with the Loch Arkaig treasure.

In 1765 he escaped to France but died soon afterwards.[2] With the help of James Macpherson, the Cluny estate was recovered by Duncan Macpherson, son of Ewen, in 1784.[3]
