Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is an award-winning[4] 2010 documentary film about the U.S. alternative rock band Fishbone.[5][6] Co-produced[1] and co-directed by Lev Anderson and Chris Metzler,[7][8] and narrated by actor Laurence Fishburne,[2][9] Everyday Sunshine premiered during the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival, on 19 June 2010.[10][11] The film was released by Pale Griot Film,[1] and was made to coincide with Fishbone's 25th anniversary.[12][13] It was released on iTunes in February 2012 to coincide with Black History Month.[13]
Synopsis
Everyday Sunshine is a rock documentary[13][14] that recounts Fishbone's near breakthrough.[15] It chronicles the birth of the band,[16] its highs and lows,[3][8] and its influence on other bands.[16] The film centers on the partnership between founding members Norwood Fisher and Angelo Moore, and their struggle to keep Fishbone going.[5][15] Everyday Sunshine features interviews with members of the band,[11][13] footage of the band performing live,[1][9][16] and incorporates interviews with their friends and colleagues,[3] including Les Claypool,[12] George Clinton,[3][14] Perry Farrell,[13][16] Flea,[11][16] Bob Forrest,[13] Eugene Hütz,[15] Ice-T,[13][14] Branford Marsalis,[11][14] Questlove,[12][15] Tim Robbins,[16] Gwen Stefani,[11][14] and Mike Watt.[11] The band's origin story is told in animated flashbacks in the visual style of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids.[15]
Reception
The film was critically acclaimed.[12] At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 100% "certified fresh" score, with an average rating of 7.4/10, based on 43 reviews.[17] Rotten Tomatoes' critics consensus reads: "Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone is an entertaining, heartwarming, and balanced documentary about the influential Los Angeles band."[17] It was Rotten Tomatoes' highest scoring movie of 2011.[18] At Metacritic it has a 69/100 score, based on 16 reviews.[19] It won the Best Documentary award at the 2011 DC Independent Film Festival,[4] and was a Best Feature Documentary nominee at the 2011 Guam International Film Festival.[20]
