Eurosonic Noorderslag is an annual four-day conference and showcase festival presenting European pop music. The festival takes place in January in Groningen.[1] Eurosonic Noorderslag is organized by the Noorderslag Foundation and aims to strengthen the European pop sector and promote European pop music. To accomplish this, the foundation offers a platform to present European musical talent and encourages its international exchange.[2] Means to accomplish this aim are two festivals (Eurosonic and Noorderslag), a conference,[3] a talent exchange program (European Talent Exchange Program)[4] and the presentation of several music awards. The awards presented during Eurosonic Noorderslag are: EBBA Awards,[5] Pop Award,[6] European Festivals Awards,[7] Interactive Awards,[8] Pop Media Award,[9] Lex van Rossen Award[10] and The Feather.[11] Around 300 performances take place and 150 panels are organized during Eurosonic Noorderslag. The event draws in around 33,000 visitors (of which 3,000 are European music professionals) from over 43 countries.[12] The first edition of Eurosonic Noorderslag was held in 1986, under the name Noorderslag and started out as a “battle” between Belgian and Dutch bands.[13]

In 2011 Eurosonic Noorderslag presented Eurosonic Air, a free stage at the market square in Groningen, to celebrate its 25th birthday. The line-up consisted of amongst others Caro Emerald, Racoon and Kraak & Smaak. Every year the organization chooses one country as focus country highlighted during the festival. The 25th edition took place in 2011 and the Netherlands was focus country.[14] For the 2015 event Iceland will be the focus country, with many Icelandic artists scheduled to perform. Several conference panel discussions will be devoted to the Icelandic music scene and industry.[15]
