Established in 1961, European University Cyprus (Greek: Ευρωπαϊκό Πανεπιστήμιο Κύπρου) is a for-profit educational institution. First established as Cyprus College, EUC was granted university status in 2007. It is the first university in Cyprus and Greece to be awarded the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) Label by the European Commission and is one of only 40 institutions in Europe to have earned this distinction. The institution has a student enrollment of 5,000 and provides undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees.
History & Landmarks
Foundation
Cyprus College was founded in 1961 by Ioannis Gregoriou. In September 2007, the 46 year old College was acknowledged as a University, and now uses the name European University Cyprus.
1961
- Cyprus College was founded as a tertiary level institution offering various programs
1987
- The first Graduate program (the Master of Business Administration degree) was introduced
1991
- The Center of Applied Research was established as an independent, non-governmental institution providing the highest quality research services.
1995
- The undergraduate educational programs offered by Cyprus College were accredited/validated by the National Council for Educational Awards (NCEA).
1997-1998
- The School of Professional Studies had been formed through the acquisition of BPP College, an institution which offered primarily professional programs. Thus, the College today, by expanding into the field of professional courses, offers tuition leading to the ACCA, ICAEW, CAT, DiplFR and CFA qualifications.
- All undergraduate and graduate business programs leading to Diploma, Bachelor and Master Degrees were accredited by the European Council for Business Education (ECBE).
2000
- All programs of study leading to Diploma, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees were accredited by the Accreditation Council (SEKAP) of the Republic of Cyprus.
2003
- The ERMIS Research and Incubator Centre was established. The mission of ERMIS is to contribute to the technological upgrading of the country’s productive base and encourage and support local and regional development
2007
- September, 2007, Cyprus College becomes the European University Cyprus with four Schools, namely, the School of Arts and Education Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Sciences.
2010
- The first PhD in Education Sciences program is introduced
- The Degree of Law is introduced.[1][2]
- The first year that Comparative Literature master's degree has been offered.
2011
- The Medical School of the European University Cyprus will operate as an autonomous and independent School
within the university. The Medical School is expected to begin its operation this coming academic year, 2011-2012. It will accept students from Cyprus and abroad and the instruction and training will be in English and in association with local hospitals.[3][4][5]
- The MBA program of the European University Cyprus has been accredited by the UK Association of MBAs (AMBA) following a review by the AMBA Accreditation Panel.
- Awarded with the ECTS Label by the European Commission
2012
- European University Cyprus welcomes Laureate's (LIU) Honorary Chancellor and 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton to his first visit to Cyprus. President Clinton shared his ideas with students, faculty, administration and alumni in a public address on “The Current Global Economic Situation.”[6][7]
International Accreditation, Memberships and/or Achievements
E.U.C. is a member of the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE),[8] the European Council for Business Education (ECBE) and the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE).
EUC is the first private university in Cyprus that achieved the Academic Recognition by the Hellenic NARIC -ΔΟΑΤΑΠ (Διεπιστημονικός Οργανισμός Αναγνώρισης Τίτλων Ακαδημαϊκών & Πληροφόρησης).[9] ως ομοταγές και ισότιμο προς τα Ελληνικά Ανώτατα Εκπαιδευτικά Ιδρύματα.[10][11][12][13]
EUC is a member of Laureate International Universities (LIU), a worldwide network of Higher Education institutions founded in 1998 in the United States. It is an international network of institutions of higher education. The LIU network of more than 50 accredited campus based and on-line universities offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs to more than 600,000 students around the world. The students of LIU network are part of an international, academic community that spans 24 countries throughout North America, Latin America, Europe and Asia.
EUC has been assessed and is recognized with the “Investors in People” framework. Last, EUC is a member of the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) network.
