Ethan Finlay (born August 6, 1990) is an American soccer player currently playing for Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.

Career

High School

Finlay attended high school in Marshfield, Wisconsin, where he played soccer and American football. He quickly became one of the greatest players in the area, tallying all conference awards each season. Finlay was characterized as a... "great player with a tremendous amount of skill and speed". Finlay holds state records for career points, 98 goals and 69 assists. While in high school, Finlay led his club team FC Milwaukee to two USA National Club Final Fours and winning three US Region 2 championships. Finlay played two seasons for the Marshfield Soccer Assoc. summer club teams along with US ODP Regional teams for 5 years.

College and Amateur

Finlay played college soccer at Creighton University between 2008 and 2011. Ethan finished his career in the top 5 all time in Bluejay scoring, and leading the Bluejays to the 2011 NCAA Final Four in Alabama. During his time at Creighton, Finlay was a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy finalist (3), finishing second in the voting for College Soccers player of the Year award in 2012, the first ever player from Wisconsin to be a finalist for college soccer's most prestigious honor. Finlay was a NSCAA All-American First Team 2011, NSCA Academic National player of the Year 2011, College Soccer News All-American First Team 2011 and was Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2010 and 2011. Finlay was elected as the Fred Ware Award winner in 2011 as Nebraska's College Athlete of the Year.[1]

Professional

Columbus Crew selected Finlay the first round (No. 10 overall) of the 2012 MLS SuperDraft.[2] Finlay made his debut during a 2-0 loss at Colorado Rapids, coming on as a first-half substitute for the injured Dilly Duka in the 12th minute on March 10, 2012.[3] Ethan scored his first MLS goal vs the Portland Timbers in a 3-3 tie in May 2014.

International

Finlay is eligible to represent the United States, his country of birth, or Canada, through his Canadian father.[4] Finlay revealed in September 2014 that one of the two nations was considering calling him into camp in preparation for friendly matches the following month, but he declined to identify which country.[4] About playing for the United States or Canada, Finlay stated, “If I had a choice, I was born in the United States, so to play for the United States is my No. 1 priority...but I think when you have an opportunity to play at an international level, if one avenue isn’t open and another one came knocking, it’s something that I would possibly look into.”[4]
