Esteban March

Self portrait

Esteban March (1590s - 1660) was a Spanish painter of the Baroque period. He was born and died in Valencia He was the son of Miguel March. He was a disciple of the painter Pedro Orrente, and painted in the style of Jusepe Ribera. He is best known as a "battle painter" (see for example, Aniello Falcone). He is described as having an eccentric and erratic personality, if not lunatic. He collected weapons of all sorts in his studio, and often performed mock battles against the walls of the studio to instruct himself in the effects. He would work himself into a fury with music before painting. His marriage and home-life was equally disordered.
